In conjunction with the Chesapeake Conservancy and the Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI), Old Dominion University’s Mitigation & Adaptation Research Institute (MARI) hosted a Code for Good hackathon under the White House’s Climate Data initiative. The project here was to design a system of low-cost water level sensors, aggregate the data to evaluate weather conditions, and provide useful services to the community.
Using the Intel Edison, we created a proof-of-concept demo to display the conductivity of various water types. This illuminated the further design, as it is able to not only detect the ground water saturation levels but also source of the water – rain or flood – inferring vital information about what’s going on outside and what areas are safe.
ESRI’s involvement provided expertise on the ArcGIS Online system, a web mapping platform perfectly suited for displaying flood levels. Over the course of the two-day event, students and experts worked shoulder-to-shoulder designing and implementing aspects of a straightforward water level estimation tool that can show the projected map of flood effects by water levels given.

Continuing development will combine the affordable water sensors feeding data into predictive algorithms and defining such maps for useful apps. Need to know what path to take to work in the morning? The current plan is to crowd-fund development- this system can time, money, and even lives; it’s worth the investment.
